H e l l o N e w W a l l !

... we might as well be mad

that's why a day was spent prepping for sanding this wall,

which, till today, hadn't ever seen straighter days before.

The man of the house bought & used with supreme care & elegance

a professional machine, which of course is getting sold

after all our renovation works are done,

any time soon hopefully.

It's not too much to ask after 2 years { ! } of having bought & moved into this

house, right?

{ Since you might be wanting to take a glimpse into this room,

as it was until some time ago,

please click here }

With a favorite wallpaper bought but never applied till today,

cause of the rather dreadful job* of applying layers of paste,

sanding & sanding again

and especially the work

of organizing the temporary new placements of the furniture,

so that the room can also be of use during its renovation,

the day that it will be applied in all its glory {as I have imagined}

seems like a tiny victory which has taken the very long road...

how welcome it is!

For the record, this room measures 17 sm² and is on the 2nd floor of our maisonette,

which is also the last floor of the house,

meaning that there are sliding ceilings on the one side,

while the other side  - the wall we are working on - has a generous height of  3,15 meters.

My man & I both quite much liked how the room got a totally new

vibe as the bed got removed from the wall,

the white, Malm chest of drawers being directly

behind it, its six drawers facing the wall,

with a comfortable corridor for passing,

and of course opening & using the drawers.

The "arrangement" on the surface of the chest of drawers
consists of :

1. my ever favorite "Antifoni" reading lamp

bought about 10 years ago, while I was renting my own apartment,

which I now "stole" from our working room in the same floor.

2. one of our favorite stone mugs in grey purchased this Spring,

paired with a natural wooden plate

{ see 3rd pic in this post }

3. a book my man is reading

&

4. one of my very few perfumes,

which mostly acts as a ring catcher.

I think I fell in love with the look as soon

as I saw this picture taken with my i Phone this morning,

on what is a cold, mostly cloudy day

with tones of bright light { that I adore! } though.

Before I wish you all a wonderful

Sunday afternoon,

I'm renewing our "appointment" here for sometime

soon this week again,

sharing more pictures of our current

make over !

p.s

yesterday among the wall repairs and  h o u r s  {painful ones, yes!}

of cleaning,

we enjoyed consuming the sweets I begun preparing on Friday evening:

homemade chocolates, like these below

and my "well known" soufle au chocolat

which served as breakfast,

topped with raspberry jam.

{ certainly not the healthiest version of a breakfast,

a delicious one though ; ) }

The winter garden ~

... how is a little winter garden tour for a Tuesday's post?
; )
Do blame it all on being busy for the fact that I missed the chance
to wish you a wonderful  & positive in every way new week
yesterday.

Styling & photography sessions have been scheduled to be taking place.

Speaking of which, in case you feel that your products & the styling line presented here
can be good friends & make the best out of a cooperation
with each other, domesticstorieswithivy@live.com
is the address to drop your mail to.
I'm happy to give you quotes & arrange working with you,
even when we are not living physically close to one another.
Everything is possible here.

So, "polishing the space" where it is all going to be happening,
has been priority number 1.

Asides form a studio, our winter garden serves as an everyday dining area,
since it is also connected to the kitchen via a 2 meter wide opening.

It measures 2,5 (width) x 4, 07 (length) m
and consists of metal poles, which hold altogether
6 vertical windows {of which one is opening}
6 more widows making up the sliding glass roof.

If you are wondering if it is a lot & hard work to keep those windows clean,
 you are SO right.
For about €300 and more a cleaning service would cost,
{yes, life in Germany can be expensive, too}
I climb wherever I have to in order to make these babies clean & shiny.
Yes, I so do.

Other than offering an amusing show to the neighbors,
I exercise myself & also have the satisfaction
of somehow contributing to the household.

Upon purchase, this very promising room of the house
was not exactly in its best condition.
{I will skip before pictures in this case, even though I know I'm missing a guaranteed "wow"
response from you}

Rusted, poorly isolated with sloppy silicon work,
we spent winter days almost unable to use the room
{despite it being equipped with floor heating like the whole apartment}
due to very low temperatures & dripping water.

Proceeding with placing the new floors
was getting postponed till the isolation works were finished.

After a few days, much more hours & quite a few tubes of silicon,
each & every window in all its width & length has been
siliconed in pure perfection by the patient & capable hands
of our German technician.

Pretty white lines underline the windows, while it can rain cats & dogs
and we'll be sitting comfortably underneath watching
it all happen, not needing to run for paper & towels to
dry everything out.

Floors have been put.
White wooden skirting is to be ordered & placed.
Windows have received jalousies,
{these ones, which were cut to fit exactly each window}
offering us the choice between openness & privacy
most of all providing the necessary backdrop for
product photography & styling.

The roof that you see in the picture below,
where green moss has been growing,
belongs to the barn /office of our neighbors.

I'd love for them to agree that something nicer
is made with its surface,
even when the costs will obviously be on us,
but till then,
I have work to do
in order to be able to afford that,
plus finding an equal communicative level
with them, which doesn't exactly seem like a piece of cake currently.

Nothing like mutual understanding & good intentions though,
while respecting one another.

So I trust the time shall come for that, too
and it' ll all somehow work out...

for now back to our renovated interiors ; )

Since many of you while getting inspired here are using these posts are a reference,
I think that sharing some product links,
would be helpful.

So:

dining table ~> Bjursta in white
bench ~> Bjursta in black
chair ~> Urban
{found at the "as is" section in perfect condition asides its layers of dust
for less than 1/3 of its original price}
metal shelves ~> Lergerg
white ceramic pots ~> Bladet
{found in February while they were €2,99 each in our local Ikea store, so three were purchased}
a little ceramic pot with vertical lines ~> Kardemumma
a beige one with plate  ~> Mandel
and a few other white ones which are no longer available

All plants & succulents except from the two species of Rosemary,
which came home this Saturday,
have been found over the years at Ikea
& have been part of our plant family.

The garland is handmade by me from vintage Albert Van Luit Wallpaper
dating back to the 1960s.
There is enough material left to make one or two more for you too,
in case you'd like to have one.

The two wooden lanterns in Asian style in white & grey,
were a Christmas present for the new home,
which I was happy to make since they were also found half price.

If you notice me too often referring to prices & the fact that things
are quite often bought when on offer or a reduction,
is because I enjoy spending less for more whenever possible
&
cause these posts sharing the making of our home
do not in any way intend in being a showing off of what money can buy.

Our line of thinking here is that money should  be invested in good services
rather than on products carrying a label.
Not that we don't like and appreciate pretty & expensive things,
just do not believe that there should be a confusion between
living with flair & living with money.

And however money is a valuable asset of our modern societies,
the need to also use it & invest it wisely & correctly
highlights the ethics of this company.

Yes, I just referred to Domestic Stories as a company, God knows why & it was about time.

The intention is to share that beautiful style,
serene interior environments & a high quality of living
can be achieved with correct, inspired planning.

Now let's return to some product facts, shall we?

The square linen cushions measuring 50 x 50 cm are from h&m home
and I'm very proud to have already bought them for €4.95 a piece instead of €17, 95
as early as in October, before we actually moved to the new place,
when my plans for the winter garden were being made.

Speaking of fabrics, the pillow with the black & white New York illustration
is also from h&m & it is identical to {this} one in green we have.
Ordered years ago when found for €1.95 per piece.

Not only do I love h&m home online service,
I also love the fact that when someone conquers his/ her need to have something
as soon as it is thrown in the market,
has the ability to actually have more than one might be able to afford in total.

The only expense that I have for that is patience & good timing.
On line sites are regularly checked a few times a month
&
there is always a little amount in reserve for some extra expenses such as
ordering 4 + 2 pillows for €24 when they would have actually cost
€90.

Now isn't that nice?
Unless my yearly earnings severely multiply & with my current life attitude,
I just can't justify spending €90 on 6 pillows.
I'm also not willing to put my need for pretty things aside though.
So, I welcome alternatives.
Indeed I do.

oh, looking back up , I see that I forgot to mention what on earth  is {this} custom made by me bench without legs doing on the floor.
Well, nothing in particular my dears,
just practicing its soon new role,
when some birch branches will be brought from the woods
to make up the new legs.
hoping for some awesomeness... swoon!

Here are some more shots, as I truly loved the bright, white light
the space was taking this past, rainy Sunday...

Below, you can see the direct view to the woods in between our neighboring house.
Also my favorite vintage, glass pear, which has seen its more glorious moments as part of {this}
set up in our previous home.

And here are some shots, experimenting with natural light & camera settings,
as seen when one enters the kitchen:

And to bring you back inside the winter garden,
to its right side, it consists of all windows,
some of which have been dressed with curtains,
perfectly hand sewn {!} by my mother from {this} fabric
{poor woman came to visit & all she did was sew curtains,
that's how bad of a daughter I can be}

and a little glimpse of the right part of the kitchen,
placed opposite the cooking area
{those promised floor plans I know!}
where you can see
our refrigerator & freezer
all secretly hidden behind white shiny doors,
so that the space looks more cohesive, calm & bigger.

Remember our bread bag from {here}?
It now hangs in the opening between the kitchen & the dining area,
so that it is easily accessible,
while its linen texture & ruffles soften a bit the space's many lines.

More on the right corner of the winter garden soon.
I have been taking so many pictures these days!

Last but not least, need I say that making these pictures & putting together a post such as this one is a lot of hours of concentrated work?

Domestic Stories are opening their doors to Sponsors,
cause they SO much want to go on existing,
not on such a huge personal expense though.

Cause time & effort is precious.

Sponsoring concept soon to be shared, still you may already contact us in case you are interested in acquiring a spot in our stylish family ; )

And not to forget, the Fabric & Handle Tote Shopping Bag give away winner is to be announced.
The lucky one will find a notification in her/ his mailbox.

See you here very soon with lots of inspiration & more my dears  ~
Have yourselves a great day!

... mmmm, a cup of comfort... anyone?

 hello darlings,
how about a cup of comfort for this Friday & the weekend ahead?

a hot drink, some pieces of dark chocolate & slices of my favorite
  German "Stollen",
were my treats after another day of soup eating.

Not that I dislike soups in any way, to the contrary, actually {love them} for the winter,
but try eating the same kind of soup a few days in a row
  &
you'll possibly notice that sense of boredom

The frozen sunshiny days seem to have left our region
and rainy weather is thriving again...

 Guessing what that means?
time for candles, candles & more of them even during the day to
warm the light & atmosphere in our environment,
 much like {then}...

The pictures are taken in what will one day be our dining room
& my little studio corner.

It in fact is a room mostly made of glass,
or else a winter garden,
connected to the kitchen area,
having an outlook to some neighboring houses & the woods

In our current & quite temporary arrangement,
there seems to be an unusual amount of color
for my standards,
but then this room will see many faces & phases,
till it's done, so why not?
 ; )

Here's some little help for you to start taking an idea...

Other than placing our new {table} & a {bench},
this room is rather undone & in serious need of :

1 ~> new floors to be placed
(temporarily stored under our couch & bed,
which were bought from {this} company)

2 ~> 5 more jalousies like the one just temporarily placed,
to dress the 6 vertical windows in a row,
so that we have more of privacy when wanted
some extra isolation against the cold that indeed is brought
inside during the winter

3 ~> a curtain,
whose {fabric} is already chosen sewn,
to be placed on the side of the "window" wall
(not seen in the picture)

4 ~> a little desk shelf for my individual work corner

5 ~> cables for pendants lights to be placed by an electrician
so that they "fall" above the dining area
&
actually quite a few other details, it rather makes no sense to mention,
when all the room is not properly displayed

in time though my friends...
in case you are looking forward, just imagine my own anticipation

... other than that, we have been also very much
enjoying the light of our new lanterns (one in white & one in grey)
and occasional meals,
while covered in blankets ; )

here is a shot made on the 24th of December,
when we first used our new table & room
for breakfast

and here is one more shot taken this afternoon,
a little before sundown when rain was pouring...
I kinda love this moody light...
I think...

make it a great one my dears!

~ the Sunny Kitchen project

Well, I know that we are just around the corner of Christmas and this might seem like a summer project, but as the sun rose this morning brightening up even more the all white surrounding (it snowed so incredibly much last night!), all I could bring in my mind was a little side project I engaged in while I was in Greece this past November.
So, I decided to take a little break from all the seasonal activities and come here to share with you:

The Sunny Kitchen project, accomplished with such simple solutions as the ones pictured below ~ but more detials and before and after pictures in just a while

So is the case, that sometimes there are parts in our homes that are left a little bit untaken care off, no matter how well organised the rest of our dwellings might be. They probably represent parts of our personalities and/or lives that need a change, a change we are quite possibly resisting. We could be holding on to the past, when all we actually need to do is to carry on.

The corner of this filled with love and sunshine kitchen is such an example. The incredibly lovely lady who owns and cooks there her tasty Greek meals, decided to have it made over, after she returned from a trip to the East. She was prepared for the change but needed help in actually making it happen.

So, we had an appointment, sat together over tea and sweets and talked about what can go, what can stay & which is the budget for organising and decorating this little corner. Ikea catalogue had come along with me and she had also agreed that it is the best solution for a cost effective, quick, easy and stylish make over.

I came up with a plan A and a plan B. As she was pleased with both solutions, she left it up to me to decide. So, let's see first, what we had to deal with:

Above you can see marked all the things that needed to be organised:

So in this corner of her kitchen, she was used to and it was convenient for her to store there:

1. bread
2. potatoes
3. onions & garlic
4. walnuts
5. newspapers (her husband reads in the morning at the breakfast table, just on the right of the picture)
6. various biscuits & crackers
7. kitchen paper

Now let's make a note of what had to go:
Actually alsmost everything else! So here is what happened:

~ the two wooden stools are being taken to the summer house (quite possibly after a nice make over and fresh coat of paint)
~ the rustic wooden storage for the bread, plastic drawers and newspaper holder are being donated to people who might need them.
~ the bottle and tin on the floor are being organised in the cupboard on the left, as it became quite accessible after the make over.

Splendid! We got rid of all things unwanted and it's about time that I hit the road and visit my closest Ikea (which in the case of Greece is the one next to the airport)
to get supplies:

Here are our tools:

Are you wondering how all of the first list's  ingredients can fit in the items pictured above?

I think a little mathematical equation will clear things out. No worries... It's the happiest case of a mathematical equation you could ever get!

In my shopping list there were actually the following:

~ 2 shelves: EKBY JÄRPEN 79x19cm
~ 2 sets of brackets: EKBY BJÄRNUM 19cm
~ 2 baskets: BYHOLMA in grey
~ 2 plastic boxes:  RETUR 22ml
and
~ 3 ceramic KARDEMUMMA pots with plants
(yes, there was even place for decoration after!)

And here is how it turned out after my dear technician and I put this corner together :

So, what do you think?
The kitchen's owner was pretty excited with the outcome and she particularly liked how the splashes of green brought a fresh note and binded nicely with her happy, flowery, vintage tiles.

There was tremendous economy done on space, as the length of the whole setting above is 79cm & the width is 20cm, in contrast to the almost 1,50 x 45cm of the previous arrangement, which was also blocking her way to the cabinets on the left.
Moreover, the ground is left completely free, which gives an airy feeling and makes moving around more easily.

Quite an effective use of space, don't you find?
Here you can see, where we organised what:

The top of the shelf on the right is left completely free (with the exception of Zucchini Love, a print from my shop which was offered as a present) so as to provide some extra space for a small plate or something else when the table is set for meals.
This is quite a small kitchen, so the table "meets" the shelves on the right part.

The lovely lady who owns this kichen had been particularly enchanted by the kitchen I designed for Apartment 44, supplying myself all the way from Ikea and therefore asked for my assistance.

She is already planning a complete kitchen make over, so that it looks something like that:

and waits for my next visit to Greece so that I pull the project together.
I couldn't be happier in working with her again!

Have you also perhaps some little corners in your homes left untaken care of?
Do you have some plans for their reorganisation?
Do you think you would benefit from some advice?
Would you like to be provided with some by me,
despite the fact that visiting here the little Penthouse or me coming to you is not an option?
Contact me via email and I'll tell you what can be done :)

In the meantime, I'd better return to taking care of seasonal issues and  promise to be back with more inspiration soon.

Warm regards from a very snowy and freezing Germany!

Ivy
